Discover the story behind Saltwater Hank's new album "Siip'nsk," a rock album written entirely in Sm’algyax, the language of the Ts’msyen people of Kxeen (Prince Rupert, British Columbia).
Jeremy Pahl, known as Saltwater Hank, will share his journey of reconnecting with his ancestral language, Sm'algya̱x, and how it inspired his latest works.
Sm’algyax is older than Ancient Greek, but today there are no first-generation speakers under the age of 60.
When not on stage, Saltwater Hank works in the Ts’msyen nation’s archives. His stage name honors his father and great-uncle, both named Hank. Pahl’s work as a cultural keeper led him to translate — literally and figuratively — Sm’algyax into country music.
Learn about the creative process, the role of language in his art, and how this project stands as a symbol of resistance and revival of the Ts'msyen language and culture. Don't miss this unique opportunity!
